Programming, performance and recording opportunities throughout 2027.
Out of the Mist marks Christopher Painter’s 65th year with a flexible retrospective spanning orchestral, brass, wind, chamber and solo music. It is not a single event, but an invitation to performers, ensembles, festivals and writers to explore more than four decades of work.
The idea
Painter at 65 is designed to be practical rather than prescriptive. A contribution might be a single work in an existing programme, a chamber recital, a brass or wind concert, a composer portrait, a broadcast or recording, an interview, or a new collaborative project.
The aim is simply to make it easier to encounter the breadth of the music during 2027, while leaving each organisation or performer free to shape the project around its own audience, forces and interests.
People, places and beginnings
A few of the people whose encouragement, teaching and friendship form part of the story behind the music.
“You don't give your life to music; it IS your life. You don’t choose it, it chooses you.”
— Alun Hoddinott, personal recollection

These are starting points, not fixed packages.

See orchestral works →Brass & wind
Works for brass band and symphonic wind ensemble range from the mythic landscape of Myrkviðr to the large-scale The Broken Sea and newer wind repertoire.
See brass & wind works →Chamber & solo
Sonatas, quartets and other chamber works offer flexible programming for festivals, recital series and individual performers.
See chamber & solo works →Portrait events
A mixed programme can combine music, archive material, discussion and recorded extracts to trace recurring themes of landscape, memory, Welsh identity, literature and myth.
Hear selected recordings →Recording
Several works await new or first recordings, while others would benefit from renewed documentation in modern performances.
Discuss a recording project →Press & media
The retrospective can also provide a framework for features on Welsh music, creative life, composing for different media, or the people and places that have shaped the music.
Get in touch →“The composer always surprises as each work is different — Painter refuses to be pigeon-holed.”— Jac van Steen
A living project
The retrospective is deliberately open-ended. New performances, recordings, articles and works can be added to the site as they happen, without waiting for a single “finished” version of the project.
This website therefore acts as a central point of reference while the main Christopher Painter and Oriana Publications sites continue to carry fuller biographical and catalogue information.
